In bowel hemorrhages omit food and stimulants, but give opium. Nitric acid, ipecac, or hamamelis might also be used. In concluding, Dr. Scott said that baptisia was the prime remedy, with arsenicum second for the stage of exhaustion and debility; gelsemium when nervousness was extreme; belladonna and its analogues for the cerebral symptoms, and terebinth for the tympanites. Dr. Scott's paper was discussed by Dr. A. E. Smith, who has treated a host of cases at Chicamauga Park during the Spanish-American war. He had three cases of total blindness, all recovering. Bryonia was the remedy for nausea on assuming the sitting posture. For the tympanites there was nothing like turpentine stupes with podophyllum internally; baptisia for the slow cases; hyoscyamus for the patients apparently clear in the mind but complaining of everything. Liquid diet only was to be allowed. Diarrhea often required no treatment except occasionally a dose of castor oil. Adrenalin helped the hemorrhages. Dr. Spenser spoke somewhat skeptically of the merits of baptisia. Bryonia had seemed to him to be helpful above the second decimal.
